The University of Alberta, founded in 1908 and based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, serves 36,000 students across 200 undergraduate and 170 graduate programs. It includes agriculture, arts, business, education, law, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmaceutical sciences, recreation, public health, extension, and other departments. The extension office serves 13,000 continuing education and certification students per year. Approximately 2,000 international study students, drawn from over 100 countries, attend the institution. The University of Alberta includes the Campus Saint-Jean French language facility, based in Edmonton, and the Augustana Campus for liberal arts education, based in Camrose. The university also provides students with online learning services. The university's 21,000-square-foot National Institute of Nanotechnology (NINT) facility was opened in 2006. NINT was a joint project of the National Research Council, the Government of Alberta, and the university. The University of Alberta also is known for its Agri-Food Discovery Place facility, which conducts food safety and nutrition research. The university's libraries house 5.7 million volumes. They also provide faculty and students with access to 410,000 full-text electronic journals and 600 databases. The University of Alberta is launching or updating 15 library, interdisciplinary science, health research, and other facilities. Seventy-one active companies have been spun off from the institution's research programs. Between 1994 and 2006, the university earned over 350 patents on technologies developed at its research facilities. It has issued over 250 technology licenses, generating revenue of $30 million. The university has 47 alumni branches worldwide. The branches serve 200,000 alumni.
