Uniden (R) Corporation, launched in 1966 and based in Tokyo, Japan, develops digital home electronics, analog and digital cordless telephone, voice over IP (VoIP) telephone, marine electronics, two-way radio, scanner, and other products. The firm, founded as Uni Electronics Corporation, originally developed CB and marine transceivers. It began producing cordless telephones, radar detectors, and satellite receivers in the early 1980s. The company introduced its cellular telephone products in 1987 and its pager systems in 1988. In the late 1990s, Uniden introduced digital satellite system, CDPD modem, and network computer products. In 2001, the company began producing commercial telecommunications equipment. Uniden also offers customers IP telephone, LCD television, digital camera, plasma monitor, and digital recorder systems. The firm's CB transceivers include weather alert features. Marine transceivers include mapping, color LCD monitor, and other features. Scanners offer users access to real-time weather, natural disaster, and crime information. The company earned ISO 9001 certification in 1995. It has formed a strategic alliance with SunCorp Technologies Limited. It acquired Joden Electron Company Limited in 2006. Uniden maintains operations across Asia, the United States, and Europe. Uniden went public in 1986. It is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the 6815 code.
