Baylor College of Medicine (R), or BCM (R), founded in 1900 and based in Houston, Texas, encompasses 90 research, education, and patient care units. The private medical school trains 3,000 students annually. It includes anesthesiology, biochemistry, family and community medicine, immunology, molecular physiology and virology, molecular and human genetics, neuroscience, obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, pediatrics, pharmacology, surgery, and other departments. BCM is affiliated with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the Menninger Clinic, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and other hospitals. The Michael E. DeBakey VA hospital is named for the surgeon who joined the college's faculty in 1948. The school's research units operate on an annual budget of over $350 million. Approximately $300 million is drawn from federal sources. Originally part of Baylor University, BCM has operated as an independent institution since 1989. The organization has earned recognition from 'U.S. News & World Report.' It is accredited by the Liason Committee on Medical Education, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Physician Assistant Incorporated, the American College of Nurse Midwives, and other groups.
