Florigene Propriety Limited focuses on genetic manipulation of flower species in order to deliver improvements in shape, color, vase life, disease resistance, and other characteristics that better meet customers' needs. Florigene is based in Melbourne, Australia, and was founded in 1986, making it one of the first such companies, under the name Calgene Pacific Propriety Limited, which was changed to Florigene in 1994 after the acquisition of a Dutch company carrying that name. The company's original mission was to create the world's first blue rose flower, and it succeeded in modifying the 'blue' gene from the petunia and incorporating it into other flowers, in collaboration with its then partner Suntory Limited. Florigene has yet to create a blue rose but in 1994 did succeed in incorporating the blue gene into carnations and creating the Moon series of carnations, which is currently on the market. In 1996, the mauve-colored Florigene Moondust (TM) was the first genetically modified flower on sale in the world and was the first using the Blue Gene Technology. The second genetically modified carnation was Florigene Moonshadow (TM), which was launched in 1997 and achieved a true purple color. The various engineered species in the Florigene Moon series are currently on sale throughout the world.
