Wi-LAN Incorporated was founded in 1992 and has headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario. The company licenses intellectual property that drives produces to provide access in telecommunications markets. Wi-LAN's patents include CMA, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and ADSL technologies and the company has licensed intellectual property to companies such as Cisco, Fujitsu, and Nokia. Wi-LAN began as a broadband wireless product developer and created several major wireless industry technologies, including its W-OFDM technology that is at the core of the WiMAX standard. Wi-LAN's MC-DSSS technology is used by cdmaOne and CDMA2000. The three main groups in Wi-LAN's portfolio of wireless IP licensing products are wireless LAN (Wi-Fi); cdmaOne, CDMA2000, and WCDMA; and WiMAX technologies. Wi-LAN originally developed, manufactured, and sold WiMAX products but divested itself of that business in order to focus on its patent portfolio. The company's patented technology has been incorporated into numerous wireless area network standards, including the 802.11 line and the IEEE 802.16 line, among many others.
