The B612 Foundation, founded in 2002 and based in Houston, Texas, is developing technologies and processes that can be used to alter the orbits of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) that are over 100 meters in diameter. The organization, which includes NASA and other scientists and technicians as members, is focusing on the use of nuclear-powered plasma engines. The low-thrust NEA-Tug engine would land on an asteroid and push it out of a collision orbit. As a demonstration, the foundation hopes to alter the orbit of an NEA that is not headed toward Earth. The organization has set 2015 as a target date for the demonstration mission. The B612 Foundation was founded by Clark Chapman, Piet Hut, Ed Lu, and Rusty Schweickart. 'B612' refers to an asteroid in the children's book 'The Little Prince.'
