The Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations (CIPI), founded in 1999 and based in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, conducts research on photonics, biophotonics, information, and telecommunications technologies. It promotes photonics technologies to students and to commercial organizations. It supports multiple projects across 20 Canadian universities. The organization has conducted research on photonic diagnostic and therapeutic, high-capacity home networking, and femtosecond and attosecond laser technologies. It is developing photonics-based cellular imaging, optical transceiver, cryptography, and other systems. The organization's Technology Exploitation and Networking (TEN) program promotes CIPI's technology. The Innovative Photonic Application (IPA) program develops photonics systems for specific industries. CIPI was established under the Government of Canada's Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) program. The organization has been funded through 2009. The institute's CIPI Student Network (CIPI-S), established in 2002, allows students to work with academic and industrial photonics researchers. CIPI development programs have driven the launch of five start-up companies, including DiCOS Technologies, Femtonics, and Agile All-Photonic Network. Affiliates include JDS Uniphase, INO and Axis Photonique. CIPI began publishing the 'PHOTONS' technical review in 2002.
