MapQuest (R) Incorporated, founded as R.R. Donnelley & Sons' Cartographic Services division in 1967, provides customers with Web, wireless, CD-ROM, and other map products and services. The unit originally produced map content for academic, travel, and reference publishers. In the late 1980s, it began developing computer systems. The division designed the TripTik system for the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1993. In 1994, the unit was established by R.R. Donnelley & Sons as an independent company, GeoSystems Global Corporation. The firm changed its name to MapQuest.com Incorporated in 1999. The company was acquired by America Online Incorporated (AOL) in 2000. In 2003, MapQuest launched its MapQuest Mobile cellular telephone subscription service. Two years later, the company launched its MapQuest Traffic and MapQuest Find Me services. MapQuest Traffic provides mobile device users with access to traffic reports. MapQuest Find Me is a Global Positioning System (GPS) service that allows subscribers to exchange location information. The firm's MapQuest.com Web site is accessed by over 40 million users monthly. MapQuest also provides businesses with store locator and other mapping technology and services. The company's Site Advantage (TM) Web service allows users to integrate maps, driving directions, and search tools into Web sites. It provides users with an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) interface. An application programming interface (API) supports the customization of Site Advantage features. The Advantage Enterprise (TM) platform includes geographic server and data components, which are installed on business systems. MapQuest continues to produce printed map products. The firm is based in Denver, Colorado. It maintains additional offices in Mountville, Pennsylvania.
