RealVNC Limited, founded in 2002 and based in the United Kingdom, is known for its Virtual Network Computing (VNC) remote access software. The system, based on open source code developed in 1998, operates across multiple platforms. It allows users to access and control remote desktop computers. A Java viewer allows users to control computers from browsers, eliminating the need to install software. RealVNC systems can be employed in streamlining systems administration and help desk processes. The products also can be used by mobile personnel, enterprise workgroups, and students. VNC Personal Edition, targeted to home and small business users, includes security and file transfer features. VNC Enterprise Edition, employed by thousands of companies worldwide, also includes deployment tools. RealVNC distributes its systems under the GNU General Public License. The free programs can be downloaded from the company's Web site. RealVNC's AdderLink IP unit, designed in collaboration with keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) developer Adder, is a KVM-over-IP product. The system was introduced in 2004. RealVNC and Adder have established the Adventiq joint venture, which focuses on the design of KVM-over-IP semiconductors and software.
