Palm(R) Incorporated was founded in 1992 as Palm Computing, and provides mobile consumers with handheld computing devices and software for personal information management (PIM), infrared beaming, Bluetooth and WiFi support, digital cameras, and smartphones. Under the Treo(TM) and Centro(TM) names, the Palm smartphones provide mobile users in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East with a blend of lifestyle/work technologies, by assembling email, organizer, messaging, web access and the ability to create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint compatible files in one portable, compact pocket device, completely operable with a single hand. In 1995 Palm Computing was acquired by U.S. Robotics Corporation, in 1997 U.S. Robotics and Palm became subsidiaries of 3Com Corporation when 3 Com acquired U.S. Robotics. In 2000 Palm acquired Smartcode Technologie which helped grow its Palm OS (R) platform, and in 2000 3Com Corporation established Palm as an independently traded company. The company was renamed Palm Incorporated in 2005, after two years of being called palmOne, Incorporated after the acquisition on Handspring Incorporated in 2003.
