Abaxis Incorporated, founded in 1989, develops point-of-care chemistry and hematology systems that support the testing of humans and animals. The firm's blood analyzers provide clinicians with readings quickly. The systems include integrated quality control and calibration features. Abaxis is known for its two portable chemistry panel systems, the Piccolo (R) human blood analysis and VetScan (R) veterinary analysis products. The company's systems are built on technology developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), based in Tennessee. The firm acquired an exclusive license to the technology in 1989 and introduced its first product, the EPOC 2000, in 1992. VetScan was launched commercially in 1994. VetScan originally was bundled with the Diagnostic Profile reagent product. The portable system includes canine, feline, equine, bovine, avian, reptilian, and exotic profiles. The Piccolo point-of-care chemistry and electrolyte system was introduced in 1995. It was bundled with the General Health Panel 8 and General Health Panel 11 reagent discs. Piccolo processes whole blood, serum, and plasma. It generates results within 15 minutes. Abaxis introduced its Liver Panel Plus reagent disc in 1996. The company has earned ISO certification.
