General Atomics (GA), founded in 1955 as a division of General Dynamics, manufactures a variety of nuclear fission and fusion systems. The firm develops nuclear fuel cycle, remotely operated surveillance aircraft, and airborne sensor products. It also develops electric, electronic, wireless, and laser technologies. It develops the IGNAT (TM) and Predator (R) unmanned aircraft systems. GA is known for its TRIGA (R) research reactors. The firm markets its systems to the United States Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and other government agencies. Working with Boeing, Bechtel, and Foster-Miller, the firm also is developing magnetic levitation train transportation systems. GA's affiliated companies include General Atomics Electronic Systems (GA-ESI), ConverDyn, Cotter Corporation, Heathgate Resources Proprietary Limited, Nuclear Fuels Corporation, Rio Grande Resources Corporation, Sorrento Electronics, and Spezialtechnik Dresden GmbH. Cotter Corporation, founded in 1956 and based in Denver, Colorado, maintains uranium, vanadium, silver, copper, selenium, tungsten, and other mining and milling operations. Nuclear Fuels Corporation, established in 1991, markets uranium produced by GA's mining companies. Sorrento Electronics develops radiation monitoring and chemical distribution terminal automation systems. GA is based in San Diego, California. It maintains additional facilities across the United States and in Europe, Asia, and Australia. It employs 3,000 people worldwide.
