Scalar Corporation, founded in 1985 and based in Tokyo, Japan, develops microscopy systems. Initially, it developed customized medical equipment and computer hardware and software products. It developed the world's first video microscope in 1987. Scalar introduced its VMS-1000 line of video microscopes in 1988. Instruments were marketed to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) world wide. The company developed a skin observation scope system for OEMs in 1991. Two years later, it began marketing the system to beauty businesses. In 1994, Scalar developed a teaching aid display device, which allowed it to reach the educational market. Since the mid-1990s, it has developed skin water content gauge, zoom video microscope, pupillometer, surgical microscope, video endoscope, and external and internal monitoring systems. Partners include Rainbow International Distributors, based in California, and DS MEDIGROUP SpA, based in Italy. Scalar was founded with initial capital of 16 million yen. The firm maintains additional offices in Osaka, Japan. Its factory is based in Kanagawa-ken, Japan.
