The National Academy of Sciences (NAS), established in 1863 and based in Washington, D.C., provides government agencies with information on emerging scientific technologies. In 1916, the organization was expanded to include the National Research Council. The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964, and the Institute of Medicine was founded in 1970. Known as the National Academies, the four NAS units provide government agencies with a wide range of information, which is employed in defining new scientific, technological, and health policies. The National Academies are honorific societies that elect new members annually. Scientists, engineers, and other professionals work on a volunteer basis.
