The Eclipse Foundation, based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is a nonprofit that develops and promotes the Eclipse Platform. The platform has been designed by an open source development community. It supports multiple programming languages and vendor tools. It is written in Java and can be extended with plug-in construction toolkits. The Eclipse Foundation was established in 2001 by Borland, IBM, MERANT, QNX Software Systems, Rational Software, Red Hat, SuSE, TogetherSoft, and Webgain. New members include Sybase, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Telelogic, Advanced Systems Concepts, Intel, Micro Focus, and CanyonBlue. The organization was reorganized as a nonprofit corporation in 2004. The Eclipse Foundation maintains the Eclipse.org Web site. The organization also manages multiple open source projects, including Web tool, performance tool, and business intelligence and reporting tool projects. The Eclipse Foundation hosts the annual EclipseCon for its platform development community.
