The Space Environment Center (SEC), which is managed by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is a national and international warning center that identifies and tracks space environment disturbances. The agency includes a research unit. It forecasts solar and geomagnetic events that might undermine the operation of technological systems. Information is provided to U.S. power grid infrastructure agencies, commercial airline companies, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Air Force, NASA, satellite launch and operations companies, and to other commercial and public users. The SEC's Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI), which captures real-time space weather images, went online in 2003. The agency employs 46 people. It also works with academic and independent contractors. SEC is based in Boulder, Colorado.
