FEI (TM) Company, founded in 1971 based in Hillsboro, Oregon, offers clients its FIB, DualBeam (TM), and other charged particle beam systems. It also provides companies across the semiconductor, data storage, and industrial markets with research, development, and production services. The firm developed liquid meal ion (LMI) sources in 1981. The following year, FEI shipped its first LMI focusing column. It shipped its first electrostatically focused electron column in 1983. FEI shipped its first FIB workstation in 1989 and its first DualBeam (FIB/SEM) workstation in 1993. The company also is known for its Tecnai (TM) TEM system. The firm and Philips Electron Optics integrated global operations in 1997. Two years later, the company acquired ion beam system developer Micrion Corporation. FEI maintains additional manufacturing operations in Peabody, Massachusetts; Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and Brno, Czech Republic. It employs 1,600 people worldwide.
