EDAX Incorporated builds detectors and other equipment used in a wide range of imaging and acquisition applications. EDAX launched in 1962 as Nuclear Diodes. ND's first products were LN2-cooled detectors and x-ray systems for electron microscopes. In 1972, the firm changed its name. During the 1980's, EDAX released many electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) systems. By 1992, its DX-4 was the most popular Windows energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) system. In the 1990's, EDAX introduced new EBSD systems, including the Sapphire and Phoenix lines. It also built equipment that combined EDX spectrometry (EDS) detection with orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) (TM) technology. In 2000, EDAX released new crystallography software and beam scattering systems. In 2001, EDAX was acquired by AMETEK. In 2002, EDAX introduced GENESIS and other new detectors, including three new microanalysis products. EDAX's latest development projects include phase-cluster analysis algorithms and advanced micro-focus XRF probe technology.
