Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, founded in 1982 with a grant from businessman Edwin C. Whitehead, is a nonprofit research and teaching organization. It is affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but it manages its own research and financial operations. Each year, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research provides over 300 visiting scientists, students, postdoctoral fellows, and physicians with scientific training. Its founding faculty includes Dr. Gerald R. Fink, Dr. Rudolf Jaenisch, Dr. Harvey F. Lodish, and Dr. Robert A. Weinberg. Nobel laureate Dr. Eric Wieschaus serves on the organization's advisory board. Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research was a central contributor to the Human Genome Project. It has licensed robotics, AIDS vaccine, and over 100 other technologies to pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. It also provides the public with a wide range of lecture programs. Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research maintains four research and administrative facilities in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
