The University of Minnesota's MapServer Project provides users with access to the MapServer open source development environment, which supports the creation of spatially enabled Internet applications. MapServer runs on Linux/Apache platforms. It can compile on most UNIX systems. It also runs under Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 95/98/NT. MapServer supports the creation of geographic image maps, which can direct users to content. The system originally was developed by the University of Minnesota (UMN) ForNet project, in cooperation with NASA and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR). The Minnesota Land Management Information Center (MLMIC) and MNDNR added extra features to the system. The University of Minnesota's MapServer Project now is funded by NASA's TerraSIP.
