Tecan Group Limited focuses on proteomics, including the characterization, purification, and fractionation of proteins, and laboratory automation. Tecan offers equipment for liquid handling and robotics, as well as software such as ProTeam Suite. Its Freedom EVO is a modular platform for automating laboratories. The firm began in 1980 in Switzerland as a small development operation. The company soon began manufacturing its own instruments. In 1986, it received the 'Swiss Company of the Year' designation. In 1987, Tecan went public (Zurich Stock Exchange). Tecan then purchased companies such as SLT Laborinstruments. After financial problems in the late 1980's, Tecan began restructuring. In 1994, the company introduced a new line of instruments, the Genesis series. In 1997, the majority of Tecan shares were acquired by instrument maker PerkinElmer. In 1999, Tecan went public again and hired a new CEO, Dr. Emile Sutcliffe. In 2001, the company moved into larger headquarters and also launched Tecan Proteomics. In 2002, Tecan acquired CST Logic and Dr. Weber, both of Germany. Today, Tecan has subsidiaries around the globe.
