The University of California at San Francisco's DeRisi Lab, which operates within the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, conducts genomic research on human malaria, asthma, and viral infections. The laboratory is studying the whole genome sequence of the blood-borne pathogen Plasmodium falciparum. The pathogen produces the fatal form of human malaria. DeRisi Lab employs sequencing information in forming DNA microarrays, which then are used to characterize organisms. Gene expression technologies are employed in mapping biochemical and transcriptional pathways. DeRisi Lab also operates the Microarrays.org website, which provides visitors with access to microarray protocols and software.
