Gatan Incorporated, founded by Peter and Rex Swann in 1964, manufactures electron microscope instrumentation and software. The products are compatible with a wide range of electron microscopes, optimizing specimen preparation, imaging, and analysis processes. The firm serves industrial, government, and academic laboratories. Its products support metallurgy, electronics, biology, biotechnology, and other research. Gatan introduced the DuoMill ion milling system in 1979. Four years later, it opened a research and development facility in Pleasanton, California. Also in 1983, the company formed its Gatan GmbH subsidiary, based in Germany. Gatan GmbH handles distribution across Europe. The company formed another subsidiary, based in the U.K., in 1988. Gatan's introduced its first parallel electron energy-loss spectrometer (PEELS) in 1985. Ten years later, its DigiPEELS product provided users with automation features. The firm develops imaging filters and slow-scan CCD, or SSC, cameras. It also builds multi-scan CCD (MSC) cameras. Gatan is a member of the Roper Industries Incorporated's Analytical Instrumentation Division. In 2000, the firm acquired EM Products Group from Oxford Instruments. The acquired company has been renamed Gatan UK, and it operates as an independent manufacturing unit. Gatan has opened a new factory in Warrendale, Pennsylvania.
