PalmSource (TM) Incorporated, spun off from Palm Computing in 2002, is known for the Palm OS (R) mobile device operating system, which was developed by Palm Computing in 1996. The platform is implemented on over 39 million mobile telephones and handheld devices. The operating system runs on Palm, Garmin, Kyocera, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, and other mobile and wireless devices. It is supported by over 400,000 independent application developers worldwide. Approximately 20,000 applications run on the system. The Palm OS Cobalt operating system platform supports GSM, GPRS, WiFi, Bluetooth, SMS, and other wireless standards. PalmSource also offers customers the PalmSource Mail and PalmSource Web Browser systems. PalmSource has formed partnerships with Cingular Wireless, Orange, Spring, Bitfone, IntelliSync, Mobilitec, and other operators. PalmSource acquired China MobileSoft in 2005. It has formed a development alliance with Research In Motion (RIM). In 2005, PalmSource was acquired by ACCESS Company Limited, based in Tokyo, in 2005. ACCESS is known for its NetFront (TM) Web browser. It also operates as a mobile content provider. The firm is traded under the 4813 listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. PalmSource was listed on NASDAQ under the PSRC symbol. The firm, now an ACCESS subsidiary, no longer operates as a separate, publicly traded company. PalmSource is a member of the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), the SD Association, and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group. The company is based in Sunnyvale, California.
