Penton Media Incorporated is an international concern with a broad range of publishing operations. Its trade shows, magazines, and Web sites serve many industries. The Ohio-based corporation was founded in 1892 by a machinery-molder who had become the editor of his union's journal. In 1892, the first issue of the general molding trade magazine 'Foundry' was issued. In the 1920's and 1930's, Penton introduced many new metals and machining titles. In 1976, the company was acquired by Pittway, which merged Penton's operations with those of Industrial Publishing Company (IPC). In the 1980's and beyond, Penton Media diversified, adding trade shows and integrated media products. In summer 1998, the firm spun off from IPC and went public (NYSE: PME). Since then, its acquisitions include Streaming Media, Duke Communications, and Mecklermedia. Today, Penton Media is organized into four autonomous divisions.
