Liberate Technologies began in 1996 with the mission to create a new technology platform, a platform which came to be known as the information appliance. Members of Netscape and Oracle contributed to this platform. The new company was then called Network Computer. Since that time, several other well-known technology and venture capital firms have invested in Liberate Technologies, including Sun Microsystems and Lucent Technologies. Liberate Technologies developed a universal open platform for connecting information appliances such as cell phones, televisions, and game consoles. In May 1999, the company changed its name to Liberate Technologies to reflect its mission to open and expand the Internet. Today, Liberate products enable telecommunications, television, and Internet service providers to offer enhanced digital services, including video on demand, recording, messaging, and personalized content. LT's customers include Shaw Cable, NTL, and Comcast. The firm's partners include Oracle, Cisco Systems, Disney, and ESPN. Based in San Carlos, California, the company also has offices in Canada and England.
