Zebra Technologies Incorporated, founded in 1969 as Data Specialties Incorporated, develops on-demand printing systems. The firm produces thermal barcode label and receipt printers, card printers, radio frequency identification (RFID) smart label printers and encoders, thermal printer networking products, and label design software. Zebra Technologies serves 90 percent of Fortune 500 and Global 2000 companies, working with clients across chemical, transportation, automotive, retail, construction, telecommunications, and many other industries. The firm began developing on-demand labeling and ticketing systems in 1982. The company changed its name from Data Specialties to Zebra Technologies Corporation in 1986. An IPO was made in 1991; shares are traded on the NASDAQ. In 1998, the firm merged with Eltron International Incorporated, a desktop barcode label and card printer manufacturer. Zebra Technologies acquired mobile printing firm Comtec Information Systems in 2000. The company maintains manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and the U.K. A distribution network spans over 90 countries across Europe, Asia, the Americas, the Middle East, and the Pacific. Zebra Technologies has won recognition from Deloitte and Touche, 'Forbes,' and 'Business Finance.'
