Echelon Corporation is aimed at networking ordinary devices in buildings, factories, transportation systems, and homes. This is achieved by connecting everyday devices (such as parking meters and sound systems) to the Internet, effectively transforming these devices into Internet hosts. Echelon products, or LONWORKS (R), can be accessed with Web browsers on PCs, cellular phones, settop boxes, and PDAs without any restructuring or reinstalling of devices or systems. Businesses are able to retrieve information from the devices that run their buildings and use this information to decrease costs and increase quality and efficiency. Echelon's focus lies in four areas: commercial buildings, industrial applications, transportation systems, and homes. Devices from all of these locations can be monitored, controlled, and managed over the Internet from any location around the world.
