The Pennsylvania State University, commonly known as Penn State, is a multi-campus, public research university located in Pennsylvania. Teaching, research, and public service are Penn State’s declared objectives. The university was founded in 1855 as an agricultural college, with a gift of 200 acres from agriculturist and ironmaster James Irvin of Bellefonte. It was designated as the Commonwealth’s sole land-grant institution in 1863. At present, Penn state’s academic programs includes undergraduate, graduate, professional, and research related studies through scholarship, direct, and distance education. The university comprises 14 colleges that provide education in agriculture, arts, business, communication, earth and mineral sciences, engineering, information sciences and technology, health and human development, and nursing. The research centers in the university include applied research lab, electro-optics center, general clinical research center, materials research institute, and social sciences research institute. The Paterno and Pattee Libraries of the university have thousands of books on business, life sciences, maps, social sciences, and engineering. The university holds sports and recreation activities, such as Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Blue Band, and Sports Camps for the students. Penn State has 24 campuses across Pennsylvania, including Penn State Altoona, Penn State Beaver, Penn State Berks, Penn State Brandywine, and Penn State Harrisburg. Penn State is ranked 15th among public doctoral universities, 20th among undergraduate business programs, and 5th in Supply Chain Management/Logistics.
