Marathon (R) Oil Corporation, established in 1997 and based in Houston, Texas, is a global energy firm that includes crude oil and natural gas exploration, production, refining, oil sands, and supply units. The firm's oil production operations are based in the United States, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Angola, and Indonesia. It also has operations in the North Sea. The company owns a 20 percent stake in the Atabasca Oil Sands Project, which operates in Alberta, Canada. Marathon Oil's seven refineries in the United States have a combined production capacity of over 1 million barrels per day. The firm is the fifth-largest oil refiner in the country. The company also includes the Speedway SuperAmerica LLC (SSA) unit, which is the fourth-largest gasoline and convenience store chain in the United States. The firm holds a 50 percent stake in Pilot Travel Centers LLC, the largest travel center network in the United States. Marathon Oil has acquired Western Oil Sands Incorporated, Khanty Mansiysk Oil Corporation, Tarragon Oil & Gas Limited, and other companies. The firm went public in 2002. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the MRO symbol.
