The Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition, or SPARC (R), is an international alliance of libraries that promotes the development of scholarly research communications models. The frameworks support the dissemination of digital information and reduce library operating costs. SPARC demonstrates business and publishing models. It promotes new scientific, technical, medical, humanities, and social sciences journals. Coalition members pledge to support and purchase SPARC-endorsed journals. The organization collaborates with libraries, authors, and publishers. It provides university presses, societies, and other academic and nonprofit organizations with business plan development, market analysis, pricing development, and other consulting services. SPARC was founded in 1998. It is based in Washington, D.C. The organization was launched by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). SPARC serves 200 institutions worldwide. Membership is drawn from North America, Europe, and Asia. Working with Ligue des Bibliotheques Europeennes de Recherche (LIBER) and other organizations, the group established SPARC Europe in 2001. SPARC is financed with membership fees and grants.
