The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, established by the Wellcome Trust and the U.K. Medical Research Council in 1992, is a leading genomics research center. The nonprofit organization conducts large-scale genome analyses. It has mapped, sequenced, and decoded the human genome and the genomes of other organisms. It was a leading contributor to the Human Genome Project, handling one-third of its sequencing tasks. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute includes human disease profiling, population and comparative genomics, genome dynamics and evolution, metabolic disease, molecular cytogenetics, neurological disease genetics, coronary artery disease informatics, and other research groups. The institute's informatics department has developed gene prediction, motif identification, genome search and assembly, and other standalone applications. The programs are distributed to the research community. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute also operates the Wellcome Trust School of Human Genomics. The five-day educational event allows PhD students to interact with leading geneticists. The Wellcome Trust awarded the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute $430 million in 2001. The institute was founded as the Sanger Centre. It is based in Cambridge, England.
