The Wi-Fi Alliance (R), established in 1999, promotes high-speed wireless local area networking (WLAN) standards. The organization tests and certifies wireless devices that employ IEEE 802.11 specifications. Since 2000, it has certified the interoperability of over 4,200 products designed for the home or enterprise markets. Network access point, router, gateway, digital camera, audio device, desktop computer, mobile telephone, and other products have been provided with the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED (TM) designation. Security, authentication, multimedia content support, power management, and other tests are conducted by 12 independent laboratories across eight countries. The Wi-Fi Alliance also distributes technology information to businesses and general consumers. The organization's website allows travelers to find Wi-Fi ZONE (TM) locations worldwide. Wi-Fi ZONE locations employ Wi-Fi CERTIFIED systems. Wi-Fi Alliance represents 300 members across 20 countries.
