One Laptop per Child (OLPC), established in 2005 and based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a nonprofit that distributes inexpensive laptop computers to children in developing countries. It focuses on delivering technology to students in rural areas. The organization's XO computers and software programs prompt students with no access to classrooms to learn about learning itself. The XO system includes a full-color display, a 500 MHz processor, 356MB of DRAM, and 1GB of Flash memory. The laptop also includes three USB ports, an SD card slot, and wireless broadband features. Wireless broadband technology supports the creation of ad hoc local networks. OLPC systems operate on the Linux platform. The organization markets its products to education ministries. The founding of OLPC was driven by a research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that focused on the development of a $100 laptop computer. The organization operates independently of MIT. OLPC was founded by MIT Media Lab researcher Nicholas Negroponte.
