Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited, spun out from Virgin Group in 1984, is one of Britain's leading airlines. Operations are based at the Gatwick, Heathrow, and Manchester airports in the United Kingdom. The firm offers travelers flights to cities across Europe, North America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Virgin Atlantic Airways' fleet originally consisted of Boeing 747 aircraft. The company also has employed Airbus A340 aircraft. In 2011, the firm will expand its fleet with over two dozen Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes. Virgin Atlantic Airways acquired a 90 percent share in Euro/Belgian Airlines in 1996. The service, renamed Virgin Express, is based in Brussels, Belgium. Virgin Atlantic Airways introduced the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer circumnavigation airplane in 2004. Virgin Atlantic Airways has formed alliances with CityJet, Malaysian Airlines, bmi British Midland, Continental Airlines, Air China, and other firms. Singapore Airlines acquired a 49 percent stake in the company in 2000. Virgin Atlantic Airways was founded by Richard Branson.
