CANARIE Incorporated, founded in 1993 based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is a nonprofit Internet development organization that is supported by members, business partners, and government agencies. The organization promotes the development and deployment of optimized networks, applications, products, and services. The nonprofit has funded 300 projects. It has collaborated with over 1,000 companies, 2,100 schools, and 40 government agencies. It works with 35,000 university researchers across all Canadian provinces. CANARIE, working with partners, has developed User Controlled LightPath (UCLP) hybrid architecture network software. The organization's projects support Canada's participation in TRIUMF, NEPTUNE, Alcam, Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), and other international scientific initiatives. It deployed the CAnet 3 optical Internet research and education network in 1998. CANARIE's research is employed by businesses and researchers across the aerospace, agriculture, biology, biotechnology, civil engineering, forestry, genomics, health care, oceanography, oil and gas, and high-energy physics sectors.
