The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA), established in 1958 and based in Washington, D.C., is a federal agency that conducts aeronautics research. It also manages a variety of space exploration programs. The agency extended the research activities of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which was established in 1915. NASA is known for its Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Cassini, Explorer, Space Shuttle, International Space Station, and Hubble Space Telescope projects. The agency includes Ames Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, and other facilities. NASA collaborates with government agencies, universities, and businesses. The agency will initiate robotic moon missions to the Moon in 2008. It will return people to the Moon by 2020. The agency will complete construction of the International Space Station by 2010.
