Opalux Incorporated, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a privately held company that develops color display, energy conservation coating, counterfeiting protection, and other technologies. The firm's P-Ink technology employs structured photonic crystals to produce pure colors that are electronically tunable across the visible, UV, and infrared spectral range. P-Ink reduces power consumption. It generates high contrast displays in full sunlight. It also includes substrate independence features. Opalux also is known for Elastink technology, which employs color-variant photonic crystals. Color changes are effected mechanically. The technology supports the creation of customized, easily recognized color signatures that are difficult to counterfeit. Opalux systems are based on research conducted by Dr. Geoffrey Ozin and Dr. Andre Arsenault at the University of Toronto. Dr. Arsenault won an NSERC Innovation Challenge Award in 2007. Ozin and Arsenault also are the authors of 'Nanochemistry: A Chemical Approach to Nanomaterials.' The company plans to work with partners across the digital signage, security, entertainment, and financial services sectors.
