HeartWare (R) Limited, based in Sydney, Australia, develops a variety of blood left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) that are employed in the treatment of advanced heart disease. The company is known for its HVAD (TM) and MVAD (TM) blood pumps, which are implanted above patients' diaphragms. The placement of devices eliminates the need for abdominal surgery. The HVAD system, in clinical trials, includes LVAD pump, signal controller, battery, battery charger, AC adapter, and alarm adapter components. HeartWare also provides clients with HVAD surgical tools. The MVAD pump, in development, is one-third the size of the HVAD device. The IV-VAD pump, one-tenth the size of HVAD device, also is in development. HeartWare's Transcutaneous Energy Transfer System (TETS) employs induction across the skin to recharge implanted LVAD battery packs. The firm was launched in 2003 as HeartWare Incorporated. It was based originally in the United States. HeartWare Incorporated acquired Kriton Medical Incorporated and that firm's HeartWare technology 2003. In 2005, the HeartWare Limited company, based in Australia, acquired HeartWare Incorporated. HeartWare went public in 2005. The company is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange under the HTW symbol. HeartWare maintains additional offices in Miramar, Florida.
