Talisman Energy Incorporated, founded in 1992 and based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, discovers, processes, and distributes crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids. The firm is the leading deep natural gas explorer in Western Canada. The company maintains operations in the North Sea, Southeast Asia, Australia, North Africa, and Trinidad and Tobago. It also explores for oil and gas in Alaska, Colombia, Peru, and Qatar. In 2006, 54 percent of the firm's production was crude oil and liquids. 46 percent of production was natural gas. Talisman Energy originally was a British Petroleum Company (BP) subsidiary, BP Canada Incorporated, established in the early 1950s. BP sold its 57 percent stake in the business to the public in 1992, creating Talisman Energy Incorporated. The firm has acquired Bow Valley Energy Incorporated, Goal Petroleum Public Limited Company, Pembina Resources Limited, Arakis Energy Corporation, Rigel Energy Corporation, VISTA Midstream Solutions Limited, and Paladin Resources Public Limited Company. Talisman Energy is listed on the Toronto and the New York stock exchanges. The firm repurchased approximately 51 million shares in 2006.
