HART (R) Communication Foundation, founded in 1993 and based in Austin, Texas, is a nonprofit that drives the development and implementation of the Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) and WirelessHART (TM) communications protocols. HART is a bi-directional industrial field communications protocol. It allows field instruments to exchange device identification, calibration, process variable, alert, and other data with host systems. The protocol is implemented in approximately 25 million devices. WirelessHART is an open wireless communications standard that supports process measurement and control operations. The foundation maintains protocol specifications and ensures that the technologies can be accessed and deployed by instrumentation manufacturers, systems integrators, nonprofit organizations, universities, and government agencies worldwide. HART Communication Foundation provides members with online training services. The nonprofit formed alliances with commercial and government organizations. HART Communication Foundation maintains additional offices in Basel, Switzerland and Shanghai, China.
