Title: Verizon, Microsoft Close to Mobile Search Deal

Verizon Incorporated, a leading telecom company, will partner with Google Incorporated to install a default search engine in Verizon cellphones. Telecom companies are generally apprehensive and reluctant to partner with web giants like Google as the partnership would mean losing a major part of advertising revenue. Verizon is already in partnership with Medio Systems Incorporated to handle digital content searches and to provide links to other Internet companies like Facebook. However, Verizon users do not have a common search platform to access web pages, ring tones and other information. Hence, Verizon plans to use the Google search bar, which web users are very familiar with, on the home screen of its phones to simplify search options for its users. In the future, Verizon could extend Google search to its web portal and FiOS TV service. Google will profit from the deal because Verizon would provide a share of its earnings through search advertising to its partners. Through major carriers like Verizon, Google can know the location of the user and create ads that are highly relevant. The deal is expected to come through shortly once both companies decide on key issues such as sharing of ad revenue and saving information from cellphone searches. Many telecom companies have similar plans to join with web giants like Google and Yahoo! to provide a wide package of search services to their cellphone users.
