Adobe Open Screen Project aims to bring the Internet experience to devices ranging from televisions to mobile handsets to personal navigation devices. These new 'consumer computing devices' will serve to bridge the consumer electronics-personal computer gap and power a new class of Internet applications. It will serve to create a new breed of computers that are smaller, more economical, and more robust than the current PC or consumer electronics product. Previous attempts to merge the two types of electronics have resulted in failure due to many problems. Poor hardware quality, bad Internet experience, non-user friendly operating systems, and bad business models were the main reasons for the demise of other consumer computing devices. However, many of the problems are either solved, or on their way to being solved. For example, the hardware issue has been solved via the development of hardware such as Intel's Atom, which can provide PC-like performance and daylong battery life. The Internet problem, however, has not been solved. 'That's where the Adobe Open Screen Project comes in.' It will provide the full Flash support that the products need to yield a fully functional Internet experience. A big problem in creating these types of devices is the fragmentation of the market. The market is split among different systems. The problem is that there are many competitors for the mobile OSes and when a company commits to an OS, there are new hurdles to overcome. For example, security keys and code-signing certificates have to be obtained to write code for today's mobile OSes. The problems are not going to go away soon, but, according to experts in the area, because of the potential usability and convenience of the products, the change will happen.
