At its second annual developers conference, Facebook said it hopes to reach 100 million users by the end of 2008, and announced that it would reach even further by expanding outside of the U.S. The company believes it has collaborated with over 400,000 developers in more than 160 countries since it opened its platform to independent developers in 2007. The move resulted in tens of thousands of widgets and tools available for Facebook users. Facebook introduced a new set of rules to prevent spammers and boost the growth of interesting, useful applications, and said it would make it easier for developers to translate their applications into different languages. Facebook Connect, a new service that will be available later in 2008, allows users to upload their profile data and friend networks to other websites. Social networking companies are looking to spread their influence beyond their own sites, and Facebook Connect is part of this trend. Six Apart, the blogging platform, will be one of the first companies to use the new service. Facebook said it will reward developers for creating applications that help users connect and share information in a meaningful way. It will also use a new system that will brand Facebook applications as trustworthy. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said they are trying to work more closely with developers, and learn how to make sure applications that provide the most long-term value are going to work best in our ecosystem.
