There are a variety of video analysis tools out there that provide far more useful data than the average streaming video player. Apple's QuickTime Pro, Steve Greenberg's Gspot, Inlet Technologies' Semaphore, Jerome Martinez's MediaInfo and Sliq Media's WMSnoop stand out as the most noteworthy options currently available. Each comes with its own unique bundle of features and capabilities, so users should choose the program that best fits their specific needs. Semaphore is the only high quality control tool, offering a wealth of data and highly customizable features that permit effective, automated multicodec quality control. It comes with a hefty price tag, though, and free tools like WMSnoop, MediaInfo and Gspot may be sufficient for many users. WMSnoop only analyzes Windows Media files, but it does this one task very well, making it the obvious choice for those who deal exclusively with this file type. MediaInfo has the advantage of being able to analyze a broad spectrum of files on the Mac. Gspot's capabilities are limited when it comes to analyzing streaming video, but is a good choice for MPEG-2 and AVI analysis. QuickTime Pro, however, fails to compare to programs with similar functions like MediaInfo--especially since it is not available for free.
