The Internet has enabled the proliferation of video via popular sites like YouTube, and it is easier than some might think for users to get involved. It simply requires the interest and the understanding that video is the Web's most effective mode of communication. Consider that some of the most poorly shot content on YouTube can attract thousands of page views. Going upscale is less expensive and less time consuming these days. Equipment vendors like Sony and Panasonic are offering high-quality cameras for under $10,000. Panasonic's HVX200 includes proprietary 16-GB and 32-GB P2 cards and the 100-GB FireStore hard drive allows users to move files directly into an editing system and publish video very quickly. Video files are quite large, so they require a great deal of legwork and bandwidth to maintain and share them. Users with plenty of storage, processing power and bandwidth can control and serve video files internally, but there are many affordable alternatives. A content distribution network (CDN) can transcode, host and cache video content around the world at points of presence. This is this best choice for users wanting to stream by the thousands each month. Third-party hosting systems are publishing engines that work with CDNs on the user's behalf. Other concerns include streaming infrastructure, network bottlenecks, and the ability of end-users to access video content.
