Mac users have long enjoyed customizing their file and folder icons, and now CandyBar 3.1.2 eases the customization process for OS X. Reasons for customizing icons include improving appearance, making certain folders stand out, and simply adding a bit of personality. With OS X, changing the standard icons involves editing system files for all users, which can be more trouble than it's worth. Fortunately, CandyBar 3.1.2--a joint effort by Panic and IconFactory--allows safe and easy editing of both icons and Leopard's Dock. CandyBar offers icon tools in four categories: system, application program, Dock, and mounted volume icons. Select a category, and current icons appear in the upper right corner, with replacement options in the lower right. Making changes is as simple as dragging and dropping, although the changes aren't applied until you click the appropriate button. Incorporating Pixadex icon-organization software, CandyBar offers iPhoto-like capabilities, including the storing of collections in albums. Icons can be resized for browsing and their information can be viewed and stored, while Quick Look offers close-ups of all supported sizes. Additional icons can be imported or found at the IconFactory website. Although the interface can be tricky at first, CandyBar is both fun and easy to use.
