Mydamnchannel is an independent video website based on the anti-network model thought up by its creator, Rob Barnett, a veteran cable TV and radio executive who raised $3.2 million in venture capital for the project. Unlike television networks that typically own all rights to the shows they air and give revenue cuts to creators only if the show reaches DVD distribution, reruns or syndication, Barnett suggests setting up a channel and keeping creative control of all content as well as half the advertising revenue. Mydamnchannel includes such programming as long-lost rap star Coolio hosting Cookin With Coolio, Found Objects, which follows news anchors misbehaving between live takes, and You Suck at Photoshop, a mock tech tutorial that is the channels most popular show, with 8.2 million views since December 2007. Barnett thinks advertisers find his format appealing because they can know in advance which videos are running adjacent to their ads. Google joined Fandango and Match.com as an advertiser on the site, choosing it as a test site for it new video AdSense program. Barnetts model is working out well for the content and for the advertisers, thus, in the end, he may find his site has won the interest of a big media company.
