MySpace was founded in 2003 by eUniverse (later renamed Intermix Media), and now has 117 million users world wide, 73 million of which are in the U.S. News Corp. acquired the parent company in 2005 for $580 million. Chris DeWolfe, CEO and a co-founder of MySpace, is the subject of this articles Q&A interview. When asked if News Corp. was putting pressure on MySpace in the wake of lower 2008 ad-spending forecasts for the site, DeWolfe said the company has been profitable from the beginning, and that it continues to do very well for a large company that has grown so quickly in just four years. He said Nielsen lists MySpace as three times bigger than its closest competitor, that it is collaborating with Google to ensure the optimization and performance of the search giants advertising, and that the company reviews every single image that is uploaded to the site in a deep effort to prevent the kind of misuse and harassment that has hurt some of its users. He mentioned that since it was acquired by News Corp., MySpace has become more mainstream. Musicians and other creative trendsetters first made the site popular as a place to showcase their works, but the demographic has widened to include close to 40 percent of mothers in the U.S. having MySpace accounts. He explained that 20 percent of the minutes spent on the Internet are spent on MySpace, and that 45 percent of MySpace users are age 35 and older.
