While not a bad phone, Samsung's Instinct is hardly the iPhone clone it aspires to be. Sprint's timing in releasing the Samsung Instinct is unfortunate. It was designed to compete against the original iPhone, but made its appearance just a few weeks before the 3G iPhone. The new iPhone offers 8 gigabytes of memory at half the price of the original model. Its speeds can reach five times the original, and it boasts GPS and over-the-air synchronization of email, contacts, and calendars, as well as direct downloads of a host of third-party programs. Yet its camera remains simple, and it's still tied to a single carrier. Perhaps the key difference between the iPhone and its imitators is that the iPhone is really a computer that happens to work as a phone, while the reverse is true for its competition. The Samsung Instinct does resemble the iPhone superficially, but its touch-screen system is simpler, and it has a poorer screen and keyboard. It costs about the same as the 3G iPhone but offers only a fourth of the memory and lacks Wi-Fi networking. Still, the Instinct does have a removable battery and claims more than five extra hours of talk time on a charge than the 3G iPhone. It also comes with a voice-command system and handwriting recognition, both of which the iPhone lacks. Overall, though, while it's an okay choice, the Samsung Instinct is no match for the iPhone.
